I was just imagining American tech oligarchy five years from now as a parallel to Russian oil oligarchy; including the extreme poverty and wealth inequality. To really take it to the limit, we'd need Russia-style propaganda to keep the people in line, extremely poor job prospects for the masses (to keep military recruitment up), a willingness to use force to suppress dissent, and a return to trauma-bonding in the military. Much like the world consuming Russian oil, the only way to stop it would be to get the world to stop using American tech.
